Description of Artwork
The work is a still life painting created as part of my thesis coursework, which focused on researching personal objects and sentimentality as relating to objects and memory.
The object in the painting is, as the title hints, very sentimentally significant to me. The manner in which it is painted; the individual
focus on the object and almost monochromatic colour pallet, is one which I continue to use for most of my work.
Biography
Maria Borg is a Fine Art graduate currently practicing painting, and seeking to further her studies abroad. Her work focuses on the themes of personal identity; specifically memory. Whilst she appreciates and experiments with different media, she is particularly interested in the medium and rich history of painting.
Her most recent work, of which the painting is part of, is a series of still-life paintings of objects from the personal past. The objects bear personal significance to her personal past. Yet, they are mundane and unimportant to the viewer, or were so before they were conceived as art.
The act of painting becomes an attempt at glorifying these objects, and sharing their importance with the viewer. The sentimental objects possess an aura, sometimes present as positive and motherly, and other times as uncanny or unsettling.
