Biography

Lewis Wirth attended the Govt. School of Art (1946-1951) under E. Caruana Dingli, Vince Apap and Emvin Cremona, receiving many merits.

He worked at the Barclays Bank D.C.O., Tripoli, Libya from 1952 to 1969, where he was influenced by the Arab culture. His prolific and creative work was awarded by receiving a gold medal from the Dante Alleghieri Society in Tripoli. He exhibited regularly in the Barclays Bank's annual exhibitions and one of his paintings was purchased for the London Head Office. Returning to Malta in 1969 he rediscovered the beauty of his native land, painting country scenes, wayside chapels, seascapes especially St Julian's Bay, his home town. His works include watercolour, oil, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, pencil, scraper-board and collage works. His meticulous works show excellent draughtsmanship and discipline. He has left an artistic heritage of Malta's modern era. A book 'The Life and Works of Lewis Wirth (1923-2010) & Helen Cavarra (1926-1978), their creative partnership' by Joseph Paul Cassar was published on 31st July, 2014.
