THE SELFIE
‘JIEN’
2014
Clay Slip - Print
(Cotton Fabric on Plain Weave)
W62 cm x H66 cm
The selfie phenomenon is our current notion of self-portrait wherein one projects the image he wants to give of himself. Through a performativity ritual in my studio, my actual face was fully covered in clay and then transferred through an imprint on muslin. ‘Jien’ is not only a representation of my face, but it says more about me especially since it is a ‘true image’ worked with the media that inspires my practice the most. The use of a face printed on a cloth was not intended to denote the iconographical connotations that it usually evokes. I feel
very much inspired and intrigued by the malleable properties of clay with its primal and organic nature that reveal our physical association with the earth.
